He wants to build a scary tower and have an army of monstrous minions like in all the old stories, but due to how scarce monsters are in this world he's super protective and cares about the monsters your group actually finds/saves. It would actually be pretty fun to have the campaign start by the PC's getting saved by an "evil" wizard. Then moving on to establishing a monster resistance, finding allies in all the lawful evil villains who's plans for conquest have been severely dampened due to lack of monstrous minions to hire. While boosting difficulty over time won't be an issue, the problem could be whether the players get sick of fighting their 6th band of adventurers of slightly higher level than the last.Īs far as the social/political aspect goes, finding enslaved or hidden societies of monsters who've survived the adventurer boom, finding and befriending monsters that are able to live secretly among humans without their knowledge.

In this scenario your choices are basically just a list of PC races and classes of varying strength. With the standard adventure, you start with goblins and beasts and work your way through larger and more dangerous creatures until you're fighting things like dragons/liches/etc. This could be a real fun idea, but as others have said, the primary issue would be facing enemies. They should look like insane murderers to your pcs, because most of the experienced ones are. Also the whole loot is more important than anyone's life thing.

You could also try to play it neutral/good, but that requires your pcs to convince the world the adventurers are the problem long enough to argue it out - your pcs aren't even people to them at the start.Īlso feel free to play up adventurer stereotypes like murder hobos, back stabbing party members who can't stop stealing and the necromancer whose totally going to try to become a lich. If you do play classic monsters they usually have a way to spread their curse/disease/whatever and make more, but maybe have monsters that are simply captured or sealed away behind portals because not all do. Otherwise it will play like an evil campaign, burning down villages and terrorizing mortals.
You could use npc stat blocked character classes for adventure monsters. In your campaign the mortals would be the monsters, in addition to any remaining competing monsters, so treat them appropriately.
